Increase in permanent residence fees effective April 30, 2022

On April 30, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is increasing fees for all permanent residence applications. This includes economic, permit holder, family and humanitarian classes.

In 2020, IRCC increased permanent residence fees to account for inflation for the first time since 2002. At that time, it was announced that fees would increase every 2 years to adjust for inflation.

The Government of Canada supports a cost-effective approach to financing government programs, where most of the costs are the responsibility of those who receive the services and benefit directly from them.

New Updated Online Processing Times

On May 11, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced updated processing times for online applications.

  • The IRCC hired approximately 500 new processing staff, digitalized applications, and reallocated work among it’s offices around the world.

  • IRCC is expanding the use of advanced data analytics to help officers sort and process visitor visa applications submitted from outside Canada. During the time the data analytics system has been used for visitor visas, it has been shown that routine files can be assessed 87% faster.

  • New updates to IRCC’s online processing times tool to provide applicants with more accurate estimates of how long it will take to process their application.

  • Most permanent residence and citizenship services will now use dynamic processing times, with updated calculations posted weekly, based on data from the previous 6 months.

  • Dynamic processing times for temporary residence services are already in place, based on data from the past 8 or 16 weeks.

Government of Canada expands settlement services for newcomers in the Prairies

To help newcomers settling in small and rural communities across the Prairies access essential services during their first year in Canada, Marie-France Lalonde, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced an investment of more than $14 million. These funds will help expand critical resettlement capacity and settlement services in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
